Daru - Fall Beauty
Description: Given the fairly small response to Lana's Retreat, this image won't be terribly popular either, but I enjoyed making it and really like the result.

The background is based on a scene that came included w/ Vue.

Final render in Vue.

Hope you enjoy!

Some people can never see a good thing.

Lana's Retreat was a marvellous piece of art. I didn't know it wasn't popular (why wouldn't it be?). If that was down to its reception at Renderosity then I could put that down to maybe it being an "off" day when people were viewing it. I've seen fabulous images receive little praise on 'rosity at times and it sometimes feels as if it is down to people not being in the mood to comment or because there were less people viewing on the day that it hit the gallery. It must be frustrating to make an image that you can really be proud of and you don't get the response that you kind of hope for. It's the equivalent of coming out with a very funny joke that was purely ad-lib and right at the critical moment someone coughs or there is some other distraction that kills the impact. In other words, you can often be on your best form but due to timing it gets overlooked.

Right, onto your latest image. This is another beautiful scene, which to me has a different feeling to Lana's Retreat. I find it interesting how in Lana's Retreat, she seemed to fit perfectly with her surroundings. Her colour of her skin and her clothing seemed to match the setting. With Daru, she doesn't. This sounds like a criticism, which I can assure you it isn't, so let me explain. What comes across in this image as part of the interest is how Daru seems to starkly contrast with the scene. Her blue skin and unusual space outfit doesn't blend in with the earth-like Autumn location she is in. This gives a truly unique feel to the image as it makes Daru and the location look completely alien to one another. It is almost as if Daru, the alien Twi'lek, is on Earth and is experiencing it for the first time. If there was any kind of romantic backstory to it, it could be that her human lover has brought her to his terran homeworld (if not Earth itself due to crossing over Star Wars and real life) and she is completely new to it, standing out so strongly against what would naturally be expected.

Her expression, to me, indicates this in some way as well. She looks as if she is kind of uncomfortable about her surroundings or unsure of what the future holds. Not in a bad way so she is unhappy, but in that kind of feeling you get when something is so new that you feel out of place. It is something that only changes in time.

Because she appears so different against the background, I find it really compelling. It's odd that I don't get that same emotion with her in the image with the waterfall (the Naboo image). Maybe it is to do with the lighting and contrast in that image. Here every colour is richer and her skin colour looks deeper and far more prominent against the backdrop. The outfit helps a great deal as well.

All in all, I think it is a wonderful image. As an aside, it is great to see Daru again in general. Any image I get to see of your Twi'leks, especially Daru or Ciel, is a thumbs up from me anyway.

Hits/Comments

In five years at renderosity i've learned one thing for sure: The amount of hits/comments/favs an image gets is not proportional to the amount of work you put into the image, nor how much you yourself like the image. Aside from your existing base of favourite artist listings (e-bot minimum), relevant factors that i've noticed contribute to attention for a post include:

1.Timing of post
2.Gallery choice
3.Nudity in the image, nudity in thumbnail, "nudity" in the title
4.Amount of comments you place elsewhere immediately before and after posting
5.The length of time the image stays on the first few gallery pages (rate of rendo total uploads)

I suggest you learn to vent any frustrations over this, the ones you like never get the attention you think they deserve. It's like watching your kids in a play: to you they're God's gift to theatre, to everyone else they're just another kid in a tree costume. Not that I know because I don't have any kids...that i'll admit are legitimately mine...

not too bad

it could have been given a bigger closeup IMO, but still a well done image.

How about one of Bastila from KOTOR? ;)

Anyway here's a more, uhhh... well, thought to consider. A graphic novel using some of these models and their locations. How about it?

I was referring to the snapshots themselves, not the collage of them on the B&W backdrop

Favorite?!

Though I enjoy all of my creations, Daru is my favorite. She was the first, and is modeled after a character of mine in Star Wars Galaxies Jump to Lightspeed beta. For those wondering, SWG is now dead to me.
